ISLAMABAD, May 07 (Alliance News): The United States is closely monitoring the rising tensions between India and Pakistan following Indian airstrikes on five locations inside Pakistan, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday.
“I am monitoring the situation between India and Pakistan closely,” Rubio posted on his official X account, reinforcing US President Donald Trump’s earlier appeal for calm.
“I echo the US President’s comments earlier today that this hopefully ends quickly and will continue to engage both Indian and Pakistani leadership towards a peaceful resolution,” he added, signaling Washington’s concern over the escalating hostilities between the two nuclear-armed nations.
The airstrikes come days after the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which New Delhi has blamed on elements from Pakistan. Pakistan, however, has categorically denied any involvement.
Secretary Rubio held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on April 30, during which the Pakistani premier shared Islamabad’s perspective on the unfolding regional developments. Shehbaz strongly criticized India’s “provocative behavior,” calling it “deeply disappointing and worrisome.”
He rejected India’s attempt to link Pakistan to the Pahalgam attack and reiterated his call for a “transparent, credible, and neutral investigation” to determine the facts.
The Pakistani leader also condemned India’s recent move to weaponize water, calling it a threat to the lives of over 240 million people in Pakistan. He emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty does not allow either party to unilaterally withdraw from its terms.
The United States’ response comes amid heightened regional tensions, with ongoing military exchanges across the Line of Control and growing fears of a wider conflict.
