UNITED NATIONS, Feb 14 (Alliance News): Pakistan’s top diplomat at the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, has called for a diplomatic and collective response to resolve the Yemen conflict, warning that its escalation has transformed it from a local dispute into a crisis with global ramifications.
Speaking at the UN Security Council on Thursday, Ambassador Akram cautioned that resuming military operations would further deteriorate the situation in Yemen, where political and military tensions have persisted since the Houthi rebels (Ansar-Allah) took control of Sanaa in 2014.
He stressed the need to build on the progress made in the December 2023 negotiations to achieve lasting peace.
The Pakistani envoy voiced support for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s mediation efforts, endorsing the roadmap for a nationwide ceasefire and a structured political process.
He welcomed the release of the crew from the seized vessel ‘Galaxy Leader’ but strongly condemned the detention of UN personnel and humanitarian workers by the Houthis.
“We are appalled at the tragic death of a World Food Programme staff member in Houthi custody in Saada and extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” he said, calling such actions a violation of international humanitarian law.
He urged the international community to ensure the safety of UN personnel and to hold those responsible accountable.
Highlighting Yemen’s dire humanitarian situation, he noted that over 17 million people face food insecurity, while climate-related disasters have displaced 4.5 million individuals.
He called for enhanced global contributions to Yemen’s 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan.
While condemning Houthi attacks on merchant vessels, he pointed to UN reports indicating no new incidents in the past month, linking this development to the ceasefire in Gaza.
“It is imperative to ensure that the ceasefire in Gaza continues, as its success will contribute to stability in Yemen and the broader region,” he stated.
In conclusion, Ambassador Akram reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the Yemeni people in their pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity.
