NA Speaker Seeks Nominations for CEC Appointment Committee

ISLAMABAD, Feb 11 (Alliance News): National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Monday announced that a letter had been sent to the government and opposition, requesting nominations for a parliamentary committee to oversee the appointment of the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

Responding to opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan, the speaker stated that once the names are received, the appointment process would commence.

Addressing parliamentary proceedings, he reiterated that no points of order would be raised during the Question Hour, as per prior agreements. He also emphasized that no one had the right to make derogatory statements against the Parliament of Pakistan.

Sadiq expressed regret over claims labeling the 2013 and 2024 Parliaments as illegitimate, stating that such remarks were unacceptable. “When you win, the Parliament is legitimate; when others win, it is considered illegitimate,” he remarked.

Earlier, Omar Ayub stressed the need for stronger institutions for national progress and called on the government to convene a Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting to uphold the rule of law.

He also urged the federal government to fulfill its commitment to allocate 3% of the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award to the merged districts of former FATA.

On the CEC appointment, he underscored the importance of an independent Election Commission for free and fair elections.
