ISLAMABAD, Aug 07 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed serious concern over Pakistan’s annual population growth rate of 2.55 per cent, calling it an alarming trend that demands immediate and unified national action.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, he stressed the need for coordinated policy planning to ensure the country’s expanding population, particularly its youth, is transformed into a productive economic force.
Highlighting the youth as the country’s greatest asset, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to creating opportunities that empower young people to play a key role in national development.
He also underscored the necessity of enhancing women’s participation in the workforce, terming it vital for economic growth.
To address the issue effectively, the Prime Minister directed the formation of a national committee tasked with preparing a comprehensive population policy in consultation with provincial governments.
He called for a unified federal-provincial strategy and the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens on the socio-economic risks of unchecked population growth.
Officials during the meeting acknowledged that population control measures would require strong provincial collaboration and grassroots-level engagement.
The briefing also included several policy recommendations to improve planning and implementation.
