ISLAMABAD, Aug 15 (Alliance News): The Meteorological Department has warned of accelerated snow and glacier melting in Gilgit-Baltistan, raising the risk of flooding in the region.
According to the department, temperatures in the area are currently 7 to 9 degrees Celsius above normal, with abnormal heat significantly increasing the rate of snowmelt and heightening the possibility of glacier leaks.
The Flood Forecasting Division reported that both maximum and minimum temperatures remain consistently above average, causing large-scale snowmelt and boosting water flow into reservoirs.
During the first 10 days of August in the current Kharif season, water inflow into the Tarbela reservoir reached 41.8 million acre-feet, which is 5.64 million acre-feet higher than the normal seasonal inflow of 36.16 million acre-feet.
The Meteorological Department cautioned that rapid snowmelt could lead to the formation and expansion of glacial lakes, posing serious flood threats in both mountainous and low-lying areas. Authorities and residents in vulnerable regions have been urged to remain on high alert.
