RAWALPINDI, Aug 04 (Alliance News): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Gohar Ali Khan on Tuesday said the country’s political system had lost public trust and called for a “reset” through a fresh public mandate.
Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail, Gohar said statements by leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a key ally of the ruling coalition, alleging that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had been elected through rigging had further undermined the government’s credibility.
He claimed that if such allegations had been made by a coalition partner, the prime minister should have immediately sought a vote of confidence from Parliament.
According to Gohar, the prime minister’s silence reflected a loss of confidence, adding that the government had lost its moral, constitutional, legal and democratic legitimacy.
The PTI chairman’s remarks come amid an ongoing debate over governance reforms following recent comments by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who said the country’s existing governance system had “collapsed” and called for the creation of new administrative units.
The proposal has been rejected by the PPP and has also received criticism from senior government figures, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah.
Gohar said that instead of expanding the existing system, the people should be given the opportunity to decide the country’s future through fresh elections.
He added that the Constitution provides a mechanism for a vote of no confidence and said the PTI would consult its political allies on the way forward.
The PTI chairman also stressed the need for political consensus to address the country’s ongoing political challenges and called for greater attention to the demands of the provinces.
