ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (Alliance News): The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Punjab government on bail petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in connection with the May 9 violence cases.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi resumed hearing on multiple pleas challenging the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) rejection of Khan’s post-arrest bail applications.
During proceedings, CJP Afridi observed that certain findings were attached to the petitions but stressed the court would neither comment on their correctness nor examine legal aspects at this stage to avoid influencing either party.
He directed lawyers from both sides to assist the court on legal questions and to come prepared on these issues by the next hearing.
The case was adjourned until August 19.
The former prime minister, currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail, had filed the petitions under Article 185(3) of the Constitution seeking leave to appeal against the LHC’s June 24, 2025, order.
The high court had dismissed his post-arrest bail plea in FIR No. 103/2023, registered on May 12, 2023, at Police Station Sarwar Road, Lahore, under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997.
In its ruling, the LHC held that the alleged offences fell within the prohibitory clause of Section 497 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.P.C) and that the defence failed to establish grounds for further inquiry. The court also noted that Khan’s case was distinguishable from that of his co-accused.
