Flood victims revealed to be much higher than available statistics: UN

ISLAMABAD, Oct 01 (Alliance News): The United Nations has revealed that the number of victims in urgent need of assistance in flood-affected areas in Pakistan is much higher than the available figures.

An assessment by the government of Pakistan, the United Nations and other aid agencies has revealed that many people are in urgent need of aid after the devastating floods.

A revised ‘Pakistan Flood Response Plan 2022’ based on $60-80 million in aid will be launched tomorrow in Geneva, which will be dedicated to the immediate and basic needs of flood victims.

This was disclosed by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Julian Harness, while addressing a press briefing in Islamabad yesterday along with representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

He said that after an emergency appeal of 160 million dollars to provide immediate relief to the flood victims, 90 million dollars have been received within a month.

He said that food is being delivered to the needy families but it is still insufficient to meet the nutritional needs of all the people.

Statistics show that more than 5,000 schools are currently being used as shelters for displaced flood victims, while an estimated 23,900 schools have been damaged by the floods.

Speaking at the press briefing, Dr. Palitha Mahipala, representative of the World Health Organization in Pakistan, said that more than 2,000 medical centers have been damaged due to the flood, due to which the public health situation in the affected areas is alarming.
