ARLINGTON/ATLANTA, July 16 (Alliance News): Defending champions Argentina and European champions Spain booked their places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final after impressive semi-final victories, setting up a mouth-watering title clash between two of world football’s most successful nations.

Lionel Messi once again demonstrated his match-winning brilliance as Argentina staged a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in Atlanta, while Spain produced a composed and clinical display to defeat France 2-0 in Arlington and end Les Bleus’ hopes of a third World Cup title.

The final, scheduled for Sunday, will see Argentina attempt to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup trophy, while Spain seek their second world title after their triumph in 2010.

Argentina secured their place in the final after overturning a one-goal deficit in the closing stages against England. Anthony Gordon had given England the lead before Messi orchestrated a remarkable comeback with two decisive assists.

The Argentine captain first created the equaliser for Enzo Fernandez before delivering a perfectly weighted cross for Lautaro Martinez to head home the winning goal, sending the defending champions into their second successive World Cup final.

Speaking after the match, Messi described the victory as another unforgettable moment in Argentina’s football history.

“These are special feelings. This was a game the Argentine people really wanted to win, and so did we,” he said.

The 39-year-old football icon will now appear in his third FIFA World Cup final, becoming only the second player after Brazilian legend Cafu to achieve the milestone.

He also extended his record as the player with the most World Cup appearances, having featured in 33 matches across six tournaments.

“It is incredible to be playing in back-to-back finals. We never stopped believing, even when we were behind,” Messi added.

England captain Harry Kane acknowledged the decisive impact of the Argentine legend despite his team’s efforts to contain him.

“For large parts of the game we managed him well, but the very best players only need one opportunity to change a match. Messi produced that moment once again,” Kane said.

Earlier, Spain produced one of their finest performances of the tournament to eliminate tournament favourites France and advance to their first World Cup final since winning the trophy in South Africa 16 years ago.

Spain broke the deadlock midway through the opening half when Mikel Oyarzabal confidently converted a penalty after France defender Lucas Digne brought down teenage sensation Lamine Yamal inside the penalty area.

France’s difficulties increased moments later when central defender William Saliba was forced to leave the field because of a recurring lower-back injury.

Luis de la Fuente’s side maintained control throughout the contest and doubled their advantage shortly after the interval through Pedro Porro, who finished an excellent passing move involving Dani Olmo to effectively seal Spain’s victory.

Spain’s disciplined defensive structure once again proved decisive as the European champions continued their remarkable tournament, conceding only one goal while combining defensive solidity with an effective attacking approach.

France, despite boasting one of the tournament’s strongest attacking line-ups featuring Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities against Spain’s well-organised defence.

France captain Kylian Mbappe admitted his side failed to deliver the required standard in the semi-final.

“We did not play the match we wanted tactically, technically or collectively. When you fail to perform at the required level in a World Cup semi-final, you cannot expect to win,” Mbappe said.

He said Spain dominated the midfield battle throughout the contest.

“We repeatedly found ourselves outnumbered in midfield. Against a team of Spain’s quality, that creates enormous problems. They controlled the game and deserved the victory.”

Describing the defeat as a major disappointment, Mbappe said France would learn valuable lessons from the setback.

“It was our ambition to reach another World Cup final and make history for France. Naturally, there is great disappointment, but we must recover, learn from this experience and come back stronger,” he added.

The defeat also marked the conclusion of Didier Deschamps’ remarkable 14-year tenure as France head coach, during which he guided the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title and another final appearance in 2022.

Sunday’s final also carries special significance for Messi, whose legendary club career was forged during more than two decades in Spain with Barcelona. The Argentine captain will now face the country where he established himself as one of football’s greatest players.

Spain, meanwhile, will be aiming to add another FIFA World Cup title to their growing collection of international honours under coach Luis de la Fuente.

With Messi chasing another historic achievement and Spain seeking to reaffirm their status among world football’s elite, the FIFA World Cup 2026 final promises to provide a fitting conclusion to one of the most competitive tournaments in the competition’s history.
