ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (Alliance News): In a landmark step to deepen educational and cultural ties between Pakistan and Romania, the Embassy of Romania in Islamabad has announced the launch of the first-ever Romanian language classes at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad.
The initiative is part of an academic cooperation agreement signed between the Romanian Language Institute (RLI), a public body under the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania, and NUML, Pakistan’s premier institution for world languages and intercultural studies.
The agreement was signed by Diana Theodora Coibos, Director General of RLI, and Major General (Retd) Shahid Mahmood Kiani, Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), Rector of NUML.
Under the agreement, a trained Romanian lecturer will be appointed by RLI to teach Romanian language, literature, culture, and civilization at NUML’s Faculty of Languages.
These courses will be offered as elective subjects to NUML students, adding diversity to the university’s existing language programs.
The Romanian lecturer will also contribute to cultural activities and educational outreach, promoting stronger people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Romanian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Dan Stoianescu welcomed the initiative as a milestone in educational diplomacy. “We are proud to see Romanian being taught in Pakistan for the first time.
This step strengthens mutual understanding and opens the door for closer collaboration in education, culture, and youth exchange. We also look forward to Urdu language classes being introduced in Romania,” he stated.
Romanian, a Romance language with roots in Latin, is the official language of Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
While distinct in its grammar and structure from Urdu, Romanian shares several cultural and lexical influences with it, especially from Turkish and Persian. Both languages are rich in literary traditions and known for their emotional expression and emphasis on politeness.
The introduction of Romanian language studies in Pakistan is expected to benefit students interested in Erasmus+ scholarships, European academic exchanges, and careers in Romania or the broader EU.
It also supports the growing community of South Asian students and professionals in Romania, helping them integrate better with local culture and society.
The launch of these courses symbolizes the shared vision of Romania and Pakistan to promote intercultural understanding and create opportunities through education.
