PM meets UN secretary-general candidate Espinosa

ISLAMABAD, July 7 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday met María Fernanda Espinosa, a candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

During the meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s longstanding support for the United Nations and underscored the importance the country attaches to the global body.

Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that the next leadership of the United Nations would continue to promote the organisation’s three core pillars—peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights—in a balanced manner.

He stressed the importance of adhering to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions, respecting international law and treaties, and strengthening cooperation among member states to promote global peace and prosperity.

María Fernanda Espinosa thanked the prime minister for the meeting and appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and its active engagement with the United Nations over the past several decades.

She also recalled her previous visit to Pakistan in 2019 when she served as President of the United Nations General Assembly.
