Armed forces pay tribute to Lalak Jan Shaheed

ISLAMABAD, July 7 (Alliance News): The Pakistan Armed Forces on Monday observed the martyrdom anniversary of Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, paying tribute to his extraordinary bravery, unwavering commitment and supreme sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil conflict.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu joined officers, soldiers and the nation in honouring the national hero.

The military’s media wing said Lalak Jan Shaheed displayed unmatched courage and devotion while defending the country during the Kargil conflict.

The ISPR recalled that on July 7, 1999, Havildar Lalak Jan held his forward post against repeated enemy attacks, refusing to retreat despite the intense fighting. Although critically wounded during heavy mortar shelling, he declined evacuation and continued leading his comrades until he embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.

The statement described his sacrifice as a lasting symbol of courage, patriotism and selfless service, adding that his legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers and the people of Pakistan.

The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity with the same spirit of courage and determination demonstrated by Lalak Jan Shaheed.

Born on April 1, 1967, Havildar Lalak Jan joined the Pakistan Army on December 10, 1984, and served with the Northern Light Infantry Regiment. During the 1999 Kargil conflict, he volunteered to defend one of the most challenging forward positions on the mountainous front, where he successfully repelled repeated enemy attacks and inflicted heavy losses.

Despite suffering critical injuries during intense mortar fire on July 7, 1999, he refused to abandon his position and continued fighting until he was martyred. In recognition of his extraordinary gallantry, he was awarded Pakistan’s highest military honour, the Nishan-e-Haider.
