ISLAMABAD, May 9 (Alliance News): Access to quality healthcare has long remained a major challenge for rural and underserved communities across Pakistan, where limited medical facilities, shortage of specialists, and difficult travel conditions continue to hinder timely treatment.

In response to these challenges, COMSATS Internet Services (CIS) has emerged as a transformative force, using digital innovation to bridge healthcare gaps and improve medical access in some of the country’s most remote areas.

Since the appointment of Dr. Mohammad Nafees Zakaria in 2022, CIS has significantly expanded its Tele-health network, turning a modest initiative into a rapidly growing national healthcare support system.

Under his leadership, the number of Tele-health Centers has expanded from 14 to 31 fully operational facilities strategically established in difficult-to-access regions of Pakistan.

The initiative reflects a broader vision of ensuring that healthcare services remain accessible, inclusive, and efficient regardless of geographic limitations.

Unlike conventional rural clinics that often struggle to provide specialized treatment, CIS Tele-health Centers operate as digitally connected healthcare hubs.

Through remote consultations and virtual medical support, patients are able to connect with qualified specialists without leaving their communities. The centers provide a broad range of healthcare services, including ENT care, gynecology, pediatrics, dermatology, and general outpatient consultations.

This integrated model enables patients to receive specialized medical attention while reducing both travel costs and delays in treatment.

The impact of the initiative has been substantial and far-reaching. More than 150,000 patients have so far benefited from Tele-health services, many of whom had never previously interacted with qualified medical professionals.

Beyond clinical treatment, the program has also focused heavily on preventive healthcare and community awareness, helping educate people about hygiene, nutrition, sanitation, and safe water practices.

Communities connected to the Tele-health network have shown measurable improvements in health awareness and preventive care practices. Common issues such as malnutrition, iron deficiency, and poor hygiene—previously widespread due to lack of education and medical guidance—are now being actively addressed through regular consultations and awareness sessions.

This combination of treatment and education has contributed to a decline in preventable illnesses while improving overall community health standards.

The sustainability of the Tele-health model remains one of its strongest features. By combining digital infrastructure with localized healthcare delivery, CIS has developed a scalable and adaptable healthcare system capable of serving geographically isolated populations.

Each Tele-health Center acts as a vital bridge between rural communities and urban medical expertise, while simultaneously empowering local populations with knowledge that supports long-term well-being.

Encouraged by the success of its operations within Pakistan, CIS is now exploring opportunities to extend its Tele-health model to other underdeveloped countries facing similar healthcare challenges.

By exporting its experience in remote healthcare delivery and digital medical infrastructure, the organization aims to contribute toward global health equity and improved healthcare accessibility in resource-constrained regions.

The initiative highlights a growing shift in modern healthcare delivery, where Tele-health is increasingly becoming a necessity rather than a convenience.

The success of CIS demonstrates how technology-driven healthcare solutions, backed by effective leadership and strategic vision, can overcome longstanding barriers to medical access and improve lives at the grassroots level.

As Pakistan continues to confront challenges in healthcare accessibility, the CIS Tele-health initiative stands as a powerful example of innovation and public service.

It reinforces the idea that technology, when used with purpose and inclusivity, has the potential not only to connect people but also to save lives, strengthen communities, and create a healthier future for generations to come.
