LAHORE, July 10(Alliance News): The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully completing 10 liver transplants within 24 hours, setting what the institute described as a new global record in living donor liver transplantation.
According to the institute, Pakistan successfully carried out the world’s largest 10-way living donor liver transplant swap chain, involving 10 donors and 10 patients in a total of 20 major surgeries completed in a single day.
The institute said advanced medical planning helped overcome donor-recipient incompatibility, allowing patients to receive life-saving liver transplants through the innovative swap programme.
The historic transplant programme benefited patients from Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, giving them a new chance at life.
PKLI said the achievement has established a new international benchmark in living donor liver transplantation and highlighted Pakistan’s growing expertise in advanced healthcare.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Faisal Dar congratulated the medical team and the nation, calling the achievement a historic milestone for both Pakistan and humanity.
He also proposed launching a national liver transplant swap programme to expand access to life-saving treatment across the country.
