Instagram users can stop Meta AI from using their photos: here’s how

ISLAMABAD, Jul 9 (Alliance News): Meta has introduced its new Muse Image AI generator across Instagram, Meta AI and WhatsApp, allowing users to create AI-generated images and apply new visual effects to Instagram Stories. However, the new feature has also raised privacy concerns among users.

The update includes 30 new Story effects, including one that recreates the look of a disposable camera. It also features a redesigned image editor that lets users preview AI effects before applying them.

According to the company, public Instagram accounts are automatically opted in to allow Muse Image AI to create images based on publicly shared photos. This means anyone can use Meta AI to generate images featuring a public Instagram profile by including that account in an AI prompt.

Users who do not want their content to be used for AI-generated images can disable the feature through Instagram’s privacy settings. To turn it off, open the Instagram app, go to Profile > Menu > Sharing and Reuse, and disable the option “Allow people to create with and reuse your content” for both posts and reels.

Instagram’s Help Centre says users will not receive notifications if their public content is remixed using Meta AI. It also notes that disabling the setting will not remove AI-generated images that were created before the feature was turned off.

The rollout has sparked criticism from many users on social media, with concerns focusing on privacy, consent and the automatic enrolment of public accounts in the AI image generation feature.
