VANCOUVER, July 08 (Alliance News): Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw over 120 minutes, setting up a last-eight clash with defending champions Argentina.
Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as Switzerland’s hero, saving Cucho Hernandez’s penalty after Davinson Sanchez struck the crossbar. Although Manuel Akanji missed his spot-kick, Ruben Vargas calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal a historic victory for the Swiss.
“It is very difficult for me to realise what we achieved today,” Vargas said. “For 120 minutes we gave everything. We made history, and scoring the winning penalty is an unforgettable feeling.”
Colombia, seeking only their second World Cup quarter-final appearance after 2014, created the better chances during regulation time. Gustavo Puerta forced an excellent save from Kobel in the first half, while Jhon Lucumi’s powerful header struck the crossbar during extra time.
Switzerland also threatened late, with Dan Ndoye narrowly missing the target in stoppage time after a well-timed run into the penalty area.
The Swiss overcame the absence of in-form forward Johan Manzambi, who was ruled out before the match with a knee injury sustained in training, to end a long wait for a place in the World Cup’s last eight. It also marked redemption after their penalty shootout defeat to England in the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024.
Played before a largely Colombian crowd at BC Place in Vancouver, the tightly contested encounter ended in heartbreak for the South Americans, whose disciplined defence had conceded just one goal before the knockout match.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina national football team in the quarter-finals in Kansas City after Argentina staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt national football team earlier on Tuesday.
